Mindset
Having the right mindset is very important.
First, you need to believe in yourself that you can do it. Whether it is saving or making money.
When I decided I wanted to work from home after my kids, I knew blogging was the best option. I read many bloggers killing it online, earning way more than $20,000 a month. While I wasn’t too confident at the start, I believed I could make at least a few hundred dollars a month.
And I did.
I started my first blog in 2018, and less than 6 months later I started making over $1,000 a month from home. Now I make well over $5,000 a month and I feel blessed that I was able to follow my passion. The reason I share my story with you is that you first need to believe you can do anything. Follow your heart and do what you love.
While quitting your day job right away to aim for the stars is not the best option. You can start something as a side job. Once it gains momentum, pursue it as a career.
Don’t be afraid to Invest
If you want to make money you need to invest in the right things.
Educational resources, and investing in your business. The only way to learn and grow is to stay updated and informed. Whether its a day job or your own business, in this competitive day and age the only way to stand out is to be an expert in your field.
Research online, communicate with others in your business to learn from each other. Networking is a great way to have healthy competition as well. This can be a good motivation to improve performance as well.
Coming back to my blog as an example, I knew anyone can start a blog for less than $100 a year and start building it for profit. But to stand out I needed to invest in design tools to help my blog look more professional. Its the same for any business. If you produce quality work, people will trust you enough to buy from you. Unfortunately, this comes at the price of investing, but I completely believe it is worth it.
Never pay full price
How many of us plan before we shop?
Whether it’s for food deliveries, grocery shopping or even making online purchases – there are ways to save money in all these areas.
Not long ago, when I felt like ordering a pizza, I would just hop online, make my purchase and in the next 45 minutes, enjoy my $10 pizza.
Now when I want to same $10 pizza I only pay $5. How? Buy using free money-saving tools. With the use of artificial intelligence, most of these apps work in the background to save money without us having to lift a finger. Here are a few popular ones that save big money.
- Honey App – a free online browser extension that automatically adds coupon codes to the checkout when you shop online.
- Fetch Rewards – A handy phone app for moms that can use it to scan everyday shopping receipts to earn gift cards to use when you shop next. With this app, you need to have a clear receipt from a store in the US and it needs to be not older than 14 days.
- Lower monthly bills – Using the Trim app, you can find the best prices for your internet bills and car insurance. This app also helps in negotiating on your behalf for a lower price.
Make the best use of time
And the best way to do this is to turn away from all distractions like cell phones and social media.
When its time to work, give your 100%. Even if its a job at home, like cleaning. You are sure to complete your work at lot faster if you are not falling prey to distraction.
This helps free up extra time for yourself. Its also good to give yourself some “me time”, as it not only recharges the body but it helps you be more productive.
Get into a Routine
Set daily goals and create a routine to follow. I love using a daily log or a bullet journal to keep track of things.
While following a routine is important, not every day is the same. There might be days you or the kids are sick or there is an unexpected plan causing a shift in the schedule – you need to be flexible and operate with a backup plan if needed.
It’s best to set small achievable goals. This way they are easy to complete and motivate you to perform better on the next. Have a handy to-do-list for each week, month or year.
Small goals can help you achieve bigger targets.
Get Help
Whether its help with work or at home, get help if you can. If you run your own business, you won’t believe what a little help can do to you. It allows you more time to concentrate on other aspects of your business. For example, if you run an online business, you can get virtual assistants to take care of admin tasks or freelance writers to write blog posts.
Having regular breaks from your work routine does a lot of good in terms of productivity.
Save enough for retirement
Investing is the best way to grow money. If this is your first time investing, you can start small. There are many micro-investing apps that allow you to invest as little as $1.
Saving small does help save for retirement or an emergency fund. Think about this, if you can save just $5 a day, you are saving $150 a month and $1,800.
While making a conscious effort to save each day can be hard, there are micro-investing apps like Acorn that invests automatically for you. The Acorns app is only available to those in the US, and Canadian alternative is the Mylo app.
Have an Emergency Fund
An emergency fund is a financial backup plan. As the name suggests, its money needed in case of an emergency. You can use this money for unexpected expenses ranging from medical bills to home repair.
You can start small and build this money as you go, but it is important that everyone has an emergency fund running. Open a bank account and add your funds here. The important thing is to make sure not to use it unless it is really needed.
Stick to a budget
Following frugal habits is one of the best-known habits of rich people. Just because you have a lot of money doesn’t mean you don’t spend your money wisely. Regardless of whether you have or don’t have enough, saving money is a good habit to follow.
