What does it mean to ‘live in the moment’?

Living in the moment is possibly one of the greatest things you can do for yourself.

Why?

Because by living in the moment, you are allowing yourself to truly live.

You are not burdening yourself with what you have no control over. Instead, you are focusing on what’s right in front of you, paying no attention to what has happened and what may happen.

When you live your life constantly focusing on the past and the future, you are robbing yourself of today.

Things that are happening right now is the most important time of your life, as the past no longer exists and the future is far away.

Living in the moment simply means forgetting about the past and the future and just focusing on the present.

How do you practice being in the moment?

Now, living in the moment may sound a lot easier said than done. Besides, how can you just forget about the past? After all, it follows you everywhere, and the future, constantly awaits us.

Here are five tips that are guaranteed to help you learn how to live in the moment:

1. Put Away the Distractions

When it comes to living in the moment, it’s important that you actually pay attention to the moment.

Put away anything and everything that is preventing you from doing just this. Even if it’s just for a few minutes, with time it’ll feel easier to do.

2. Smile

Okay, now we’ve all heard that obnoxious phrase “turn that frown upside down”. However, as difficult as it may be to be told to smile when you clearly don’t feel like it, it has been scientifically proven that smiling can have a positive impact on our mood.

So, what are you waiting for?

Find a mirror and smile, this way you’ll be able to truly enjoy this moment.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Spontaneous

Now, let’s be honest.

You probably have something in mind that you’ve been wanting to do for a while and we both know that if you don’t act on it, you’ll never actually do it.

So, close your eyes, take a deep breath, count to three, open your eyes and go do what you told yourself you were going to do.

Whether it’s working out, or simply reading that book currently sat on your shelf.

4. Be Grateful

It can be hard to enjoy this very moment, when you have nothing to be joyful for. If that’s the case, take a closer look around.

Is there really nothing you are grateful for?

Not even that cup of coffee you love?

There are a lot of things to be grateful for, if you take a moment to reflect all the good that’s come your way.

5. Invest Your Time on the Things You Love

Many of us count down the days, hours, minutes until the end of the week because that’s the best part.

However, as harsh as it may sound, the end of the week is never promised.

Why not enjoy today? After you get out of work or school, invest some time on something that makes you happy. Whether that’s going on a walk after dinner or watching your favourite show, you don’t have to countdown the minutes to be happy.
