Please tell us a bit about yourself?

I am married with three great kids (19, 16, and 5).  I attend the same church that I grew up in. I worked at a bank for almost 15 years before I retired. And, when I retired, I thought I would never work again. 

I started working more with the nonprofit that I had joined about 10 years earlier and in the process ended up serving as Interim Executive Director and during this time I figured out that I did still want to work.

I just needed to find the right thing as going back to work for someone else and having to punch in at 8 am each day was not what I wanted to do.  And then I found Bookkeeper Business Launch and I have never looked back.

 

What is bookkeeping?

The definition from the dictionary: the activity or occupation of keeping records of the financial affairs of a business.  

Bookkeeping is the recording of the income and the expenses to reflect the health of the business.  We can learn about the sources of income, the expenditures of the business and all of this will tell us if the business is making money, losing money, growing or dying. 

 

What made you become a virtual bookkeeper?

During my prior life as a banker, I had always enjoyed the numbers aspect.

The main part of my job was building relationships and looking at the financial health of the individuals or the business applying for a loan.

I got to review tax returns and financial statements and help evaluate if they could afford the loan that they wanted. 

I found this part of the job to be the most rewarding. So when I started looking at my next career, I realized that bookkeeper was a great fit for me – it gave me the ability to help build the story for individuals and business to help them learn about their financial health.

 

Do you need a degree or a qualification to become a bookkeeper?

No, you do not need a degree to become a bookkeeper.  

 

How can a person become a bookkeeper from home? What skills make them a good fit?

I took an online course called Bookkeeper Launch. 

They teach you how to work virtually to help your clients without having to go to an office, punch someone else’s time clock and work on your terms.

There are some skills that are important to have: 

You need to have great attention to detail, have a desire to help other people, be hardworking (being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart), be organized, be able to manage multiple projects at the same time, and be personable and caring.

This is a great fit for someone with no finance or bookkeeping experience and most of the students fall into this category. And there are a lot of very successful students that fit the background.

How flexible is this for stay-at-home moms? 

Being a business owner, you get to choose how many clients you work with, who you want to work with, and the best part – when you work. 

So, if you are a stay-at-home mom, you can work on your clients when it works for you and your family. Yes, you still have deadlines with your clients, but you can make it work.

 

Can my husband take the training along with me?

How much can one expect to earn as a new bookkeeper?

The best response: it depends.
