How to Organize a Small Kitchen

Just because your kitchen space is not massive or it does not comprise a huge island, 6 stoves, double door fridge and double sinks do not mean you have to compromise its functionality and style.

Small kitchens can work and look great too, in fact, when it comes to small settings you can utilize vertical space as well and explore your creativity to come up with unique kitchen décor ideas.

1. Drawers and Slots

Whether its the kitchen or any other room of the house, storage is always a problem if your space is not big enough.

To tackle this problem, utilize space effectively by using the space on the walls and in counters and corners.

• Add slots for cutting boards, kitchen towels, cutlery, etc. on the wall to save space on countertops and drawers. This is a very useful tip through which you can create more space for other appliances and organize your whole kitchen in a sophisticated way.
  
  As for slots, there are numerous options for you, not only wooden slots work great for easy storage but wall slots also contribute to a space-saving, especially for a kitchen where counters, dishwashers, refrigerator, and other big appliances have to be.

 

• Are smaller drawers better than large drawers? It is true; placing 4 small drawers instead of 2 large drawers does not only provide more space but also look neat and organized. You can even make partitions in your drawers using plastic cards or a piece of wood or add removable shelves in the drawer for extra space. Large drawers waste vertical space and often remain unorganized because of their size.

You can add built-in shelves in the wall above kitchen counters for placing relatively smaller appliances like a blender, coffee maker, cake mixer, chopper, etc.

They can also be used for placing kitchenware on or hanging wine glasses in which would give your kitchen a nice luxury touch. You can colour coordinate the shelves and things placed on them to add more to the aesthetics of the wall.

 

Built-in Appliances

As for appliances like water dispenser, gas or microwave oven, coffee maker, and dishwasher, all these appliances built-in would not only look great but would become easier to use and save tons of space in your kitchen. 3. Standing Racks or Hanging Racks?

Racks are a great way of stacking stuff up and saving a great deal of space in your setting. As for kitchens, what can be a better display that offers easy access and transparency.

Steel Racks

Install a stainless steel rack on the wall or the kitchen counter near the sink to stack washed plates and other kitchenware. You can also place mugs and glasses in there. Not only do these racks make up for easy stacking but they also help the dishes dry faster.

Wooden Racks

4. Takedown a Wall

Okay, here is a thought, let’s take down a wall. It does sound crazy but removing the wall partitioning kitchen and living room creates an illusion of a much bigger kitchen AND dining room.

Merging the kitchen and dining room does not only make the setting look more spacious but it will also provide you with easy access to the dining table. You can chat with the family while preparing a meal and if you think your plates and expensive china is taking up a lot of stuff in your kitchen you can add a closet in your dining room to stack them in there.

 

Kitchen Bar

The space that was taken up by the wall previously can now be used to create a mini bar by installing a kitchen bar counter.

Your friends can sit there sipping on their wine and chat about random things whilst you cook up something nice to show off your hosting skills.

As our goal is to utilize minimum space, go for a sleeker design in the counters. You can always opt for a floating counter to optimize your space-saving manoeuvre. With a floating shelf comes the free space underneath where you can place the bar stools when they are not being used.

Cosy Spot

If you are more of a minimalist and aren’t looking for something as fancy as a kitchen bar, you can install peninsula cabinets and add a wide countertop.

This will make a nice little spot for children to spend time with their moms; help you kids with homework or participate in the playtime whilst watching the food on the stove. Replacing a wall with useful kitchen stuff is always a winner when it comes to optimizing space.

 

5. Small Kitchen Pantry

The pantry does not have to necessarily be in the kitchen but having one in the kitchen is more convenient and easier to access. It is quite easy to keep the pantry organized and neat when you have a large space or a walk-in pantry closet but it can be a challenge to organize one with a small kitchen area. Here are some ideas to solve such problems

6. Bringing Extra Space in Use

There is always some extra space in the kitchen which we forget to notice. You can always bring that into use and store the kitchenware you are not currently using. It does not only reduce the overcrowding but also keeps things (you need) at hand. 

• Space on the Fridge Top is great for placing small baskets, some dishes like bowls and trays. You can stack up your favourite magazines or cookbooks on the fridge to keep them from moisture and heat. Also, placing candies and other treats on there is a great way of keeping them away from the kids. 

• A window can be used for storage too. It sounds like a crazy idea but you can always hang cute little pots in front of it in which you can put the keys, leftover money from the groceries, and even plants or seeds for decoration.  
• Doors provide a storage opportunity too if you utilize it is a smart way. You can add stick-on hooks on the back of the door to hang aprons, kitchen towels. Attach mugs holders to hang extra mugs and spatulas. It keeps the place clean and conceals the extra kitchen goods on the back of the door that you can reach easily when you need it.

7. Small Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

This might sound like a strange idea when your main goal is to save space but creating displays with colour-coordinated dishes, pots or even jugs and glasses can create a look of a fancy restaurant for your kitchen and lift the aesthetics of the space whilst providing a space for kitchenware.

You can also include a touch of antiques to your display using an etagere or a cabinet. Play with textures and colours; you can use metallic etagere or a wooden one based on what goes great with your kitchen’s theme. Using solid colours or patterns can also create an illusion of a wider space so if you make the display in such a space will improve the visuals of the setting.
