How to Clean a Messy House

These speed cleaning ideas are not going to make your house perfect (Unless you do a deep clean), but it will keep your house in order.
A deep clean is usually recommended once a week.
Make sure you have all the required cleaning supplies before you begin. Stock up once a month, so you are always ready for a quick clean.
Let’s go room by room.
Where to Start when Cleaning a Messy House
When you are overwhelmed by the mess, the best way to handle it is to take it one step at a time.
With little kids at home, there is probably mess in every part of the house. This can sometimes feel stressful, but if you have a system in place, cleaning will be a breeze.
Here are 5 little tricks to help clean a messy house:
1. Choose ONE room to clean – It can be the living room or the bedroom. I like to start with the room with the least mess, this way there is a feeling of satisfaction when you get it done quickly. And because you clean fast, there’s enough motivation to do the rest of the house quickly.
2. Too tired to clean – When you need to get some cleaning done but too tired to do anything, you can follow this easy cleaning routine.
- Clean the microwave, wipe down windows and clean the kitchen sink
- Empty the trash
- Pick up anything that’s misplaced as you walk around the house
Three simple cleaning hacks that can certainly make all the difference.
3. Clear out the clutter in rooms – Get rid of mail and unwanted catalogues, and bin any unwanted paper or shopping receipts lying around. Carry a bag around
4. Make sure the vacuum cleaner is emptied before storing away. Next time you need to vacuum, you don’t need to waste time cleaning it out.
5. Toss out things in from fridge – If there is something in the fridge that seems to be going bad, get rid of it immediately. Give your fridge a good wipe for any spills in the fridge that can produce an odour.
Living Area:
The living room is the most used part of the house, especially in our home. It’s also the best room to entertain guests, so it is important that this part of the house is always clean.
1. Pick up things that don’t belong in the living room and place them in one corner of the room – to put away when you are done cleaning.
2. Dust
3. Arrange the sofa and cushions in order
4. Vacuum room if you have the time
5. Wipe down tables and mantle
6. Mop if needed
Kitchen:
It’s a good habit to clean the kitchen counters as and when you finish cooking. Of course, you don’t need to get stuck cleaning it after every meal, then it might seem like a tedious task.
1. Start with tidying up the kitchen counter and put away dirty dishes in the sink.
2. Declutter the kitchen countertops and put away things in the pantry.
3. Now we begin cleaning the dishes. If you hand wash your utensils, start with the biggest vessels first. This frees up room in the sink to continue cleaning the rest of your dishes. Keep in mind, hand washing might take a bit more time than when you use a dishwasher.
4. Once you are done with the dishes, wipe down and dry out the sink. This is the biggest job in the kitchen.
5. Next, bin the trash and replace with a new liner.
6. Finally, mop the floors.
Bathroom:
The bathroom is one of the main rooms in a house that needs to be well cleaned. So if you end up spending a few extra minutes as compared to the rest of the house it’s well worth the effort.
Keep your bathroom supplies handy before you get started otherwise you waste time searching for cleaning products.
Make sure you keep it in a secure spot away from children’s reach as most of these are hazardous chemicals.
1. Use glass cleaner to tidy up the mirror
2. Broom or mop the floor
3. Declutter – get rid of any dirty clothes lying around. Trash empty bottles of shampoo, toilet rolls and other toiletries
4. Straighten up – put away bottles of shampoo and body wash.
5. Use disinfectant wipes to clean down sinks
6. Empty bins and replace with a new bin liner
7. Clean shower or tub
8. Disinfectant spray to clean toilet
Bedroom:
Luckily the bedroom is not the dirtiest part of the house. You most likely visit this room only at bedtime and so you can leave this as the last room to clean.
1. Make the bed
2. Pick up any dirty cups
3. Trash any unwanted clutter
4. Sort out bedside table
5. Dust out any furniture
6. Pick up anything on the floor – trash it or find a home for it!
7. Put dirty clothes in the laundry
Kids room:
You might think this is the one room that needs the most attention. Surprisingly this room can be quicker to clean than the rest of the house – if you get the kids to help out.
Let the kids tidy up after they have played with their toys, and you can offer to give them stickers or little rewards. This not only helps you out a little but also makes them get into a habit of tidying up.
Here’s what can be done to tidy up.
1. Store away toys and books in the bookshelf. If there are dirty toys, but them in a plastic bag to wash
2. Make the kids bed
3. Pick up anything that doesn’t belong in the children’s room
4. Mop/vacuum floors
